Racing to the Future
AFX Champions Trophy
Presentations
Starting in 2013, Racing to the Future™ has a new traveling champion’s trophy! AFX, who has been with us from the very beginning of this program, stepped up and asked if they could sponsor a trophy for each age group, to be given to the winners of the racing competition. Of course we said “OH YEAH”! A few days later, UPS dropped off three beautiful, huge trophies!!!! And did they catch everyone’s eyes at the competition.
The AFX Champion’s Trophy is presented to the winner’s of each age group in the racing competition. Their name is engraved on one of the plaques on the front of the trophy. The school from which the student is from, displays the trophy for a year. We gather them up for the next competition in March and the next student that wins gets their name added and their school displays the trophy for that year. It’s kind of like the Borg-Warner Trophy at Indianapolis!
This being the first year we get to present these trophies, it was a very special series of events. After the engraved plates were received, we went to each school to present the trophies to the winners. This year, the winners were from literally across the state. We visited East, West and Central Kentucky in our presentations! And the schools were awesome! They really made a big deal of the presentations, having us at assemblies and award days. So let’s check out the presentations!

AFX Elementary School Champion
Jackson Kennedy
Jackson Kennedy was our first to receive the trophy for the elementary school division. Jackson received his trophy on his school’s award day, in front of the entire elementary school! Jackson had entered Racing to the Future™ twice before and the third time was the charm! He took first place this year and is already preparing his car for next year’s event!
Here we can see the Mullins School trophy case with their latest addition. Jackson’s here with his mom and dad on the left and again with his principal Mr. Birchfield. Congratulations Jackson for a being our first elementary school champion to receive the trophy!

AFX Middle School Champion
Stan Shelby Jr.
Now we head off to the middle of the state to visit our AFX Middle School Champion, Stan Shelby Jr. This was Stan’s first year in STLP and Racing to the Future™. Stan engineered a very detailed and very fast car to dominate the middle school competition. He not only won the racing competition, but took honors in the design portion as well. Carter G. Woodson Academy asked us to present the trophy to Stan during their morning assembly. Here’s Stan with the director of the academy, Jaynae Laine. Stan’s working up a new car to be even more competitive next year!
On the left we have Stan and his proud family! On the right are the young men of Carter G. Woodson Academy, out to congratulate their classmate on his accomplishment!

AFX HIgh School Champion
Riley Wyans
Now we’re off to the western part of the state to present Ryley Wyans with his AFX Championship Trophy! Riley was the picture of absolute calm and concentration during his races, hitting the green light perfectly every time. Plus he had a really fast car with a lot of wrench time put into it! Riley’s school, Franklin-Simpson High School is a recent new participant in KY STLP, and have already reached Gold status. Now they also have the bragging rights to the first Racing to the Future trophy in their school’s trophy case! And of course we are expecting Riley and his school to be a challenge to reckon with in next year’s event!
Riley and his teachers. The Gold Status for STLP looks as good as Riley’s trophy. The whole school is very proud of their STLP program and their students and the results show!
Congratulations to all our trophy winners! You did a fantastic job!
So that wraps up our Kentucky Student Technology Leadership Program’s Racing to the Future™ for the 2012-2013 Season. We would like to thank all of the teachers and Student Racers that participated this year and we look forward to racing again this Fall.
